For four years under Governor Corbett, tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians, along with our friends at PennEnvironment, fought back against the governor’s attempts to open state parks and forests to fracking.
Looking back at this year it is certainly clear that we were faced with plenty of darkness, but at the same time, there’ve been so many reasons for hope! Through it all, MoveOn members never stopped fighting. Take a minute to look at just some of the work we’ve accomplished together this year. Thank you for all you do, and here’s to 2015.
This week, the U.S. Senate listened to YOU — and not the NRA — by confirming Dr. Vivek Murthy as U.S. Surgeon General. With a vote of 51 to 43, it’s a resounding victory for public health and for our families and communities!
In November of 2013, Shell Oil announced plans to drill in the waters of America’s Arctic Ocean, a plan that threatened the wildlife, human communities, and environmental stability of the region. That’s why the organization Earthjustice started a MoveOn Petition asking the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to keep the Arctic free of unsafe oil drilling.
In July, the New York State Office of Mental Health announced plans to close two mental health facilities in the state’s Southern Tier—a move that would deny more than a million rural New Yorkers access to local mental health care. Morgan Willoughby started a MoveOn Petition to save the facilities and keep those vital services in the region.
MoveOn member Cathy Ware was worried about the state of her local community playground at the Beethoven School. Outdated play structures and poor groundskeeping made the playground dangerous for the young children who visited. That’s why she started a MoveOn Petition asking the Boston Parks Department to make the park safer.
Florida honor student Kiera Wilmot faced not only expulsion, but also criminal charges, when she was accused of conducting an unauthorized science experiment on her high school campus. The resulting social media outcry included several MoveOn Petitions demanding that prosecutors drop the charges against her.
Celeste Greig, head of the California Republican Assembly, told the media that pregnancies by rape are rare “because it’s an act of violence, because the body is traumatized.” The Courage Campaign started a MoveOn Petition calling for Greig’s resignation from her leadership position over the unscientific, offensive comments.
