about Pramila Jayapal

MoveOn is proud to endorse Rep. Pramila Jayapal for reelection in Washington’s 7th Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

Pramila Jayapal has spent her life bridging the gap between grassroots activism and policy halls. Coming to the United States alone at the age of 16, she went on to earn her MBA from Northwestern University and worked as a Wall Street analyst before dedicating her life to social and economic justice. Following the tragic events of September 11, Pramila founded Hate Free Zone (now OneAmerica), building it into Washington State’s largest immigrant advocacy organization. Over two decades, her organizing work successfully blocked the illegal deportations of thousands of Somali immigrants, registered over 23,000 voters, and shaped historic bipartisan state immigration and voting legislation.

In 2014, Pramila transitioned her activism to public office, serving in the Washington State Senate. There, she built a reputation as a pragmatic coalition builder, fighting for low-income women, funding pre-apprenticeship programs for women and people of color, and successfully pushing to raise the state minimum wage. Now serving in Congress, Pramila has consistently championed bold, progressive change, bringing her “inside-outside” organizing expertise directly to Washington D.C. She recently served as the Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) from 2021 to 2025. Under her leadership, she reformed the caucus’s bylaws to build a cohesive legislative voting bloc, championed the progressive agenda on a national stage, and established critical support infrastructure for progressive lawmakers as the caucus grew to represent nearly half of the House Democratic caucus.

How she’ll help your community:

  • Healthcare as a Human Right: Pramila is a fierce advocate for universal healthcare, working to ensure that quality medical, reproductive, and preventative care is treated as a fundamental right rather than a privilege.

  • Dignity for All Workers: A lifelong champion of the labor movement, Pramila has consistently worked to raise the minimum wage, expand access to high-paying union jobs, and protect workers from predatory payday lenders.

  • Climate Action & Green Infrastructure: Guided by an urgent need to transition to a clean energy economy, Pramila supports robust federal investments in clean public transportation, electric vehicle infrastructure, and environmental justice.

  • Protecting Democracy & Voting Rights: From her time leading Washington State’s Voting Rights Act negotiations to fighting gerrymandering, Pramila is committed to ensuring every eligible voice is heard and that our elections remain secure and fair.

Her position on key issues

  • Medicare for All: As a primary sponsor and leading voice for Medicare for All, Pramila continues to build coalitions to establish a single-payer healthcare system across the country.

  • Immigration Justice: Grounded in her experience founding OneAmerica, she advocates for a compassionate pathway to citizenship, ending arbitrary detentions, and protecting the civil liberties of all immigrants.

  • Economic Equity: Pramila is focused on correcting economic inequality by advocating for progressive taxation, fighting corporate greed, and investing public funds in community development and public resources.

  • Education and Opportunity: Drawing on her legislative wins for tuition-free community colleges, Pramila strongly supports expanding federal funding for early childhood education and making higher education accessible to all.
