Leadership and Experience

With decades of experience as a small business owner, community organizer, and dedicated public servant, Mark Pocan has spent his life fighting for Wisconsin’s working families. A native of blue-collar Kenosha, Mark learned the value of public service early on from his father, a long-time city alderman. Shortly after graduating from UW-Madison, Mark founded his own union printing shop, successfully running and owning the small business for 37 years.

Mark began his public service on the Dane County Board of Supervisors before being elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1998, succeeding his long-time friend Tammy Baldwin. In 2013, he was elected to represent Wisconsin’s 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Known as a fierce but fair champion for progressive values, Mark is the Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), the Co-Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus, and the co-founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Labor Caucus.

How he’ll help your community:

• Supporting Labor and Workers’ Rights: As a lifelong union member and co-founder of the Congressional Labor Caucus, Mark will fight to raise the federal minimum wage, strengthen the right to organize, protect worker pensions, and build an economy that prioritizes working families over corporate profits.

• Investing in Clean Energy: Mark is a strong advocate for bold climate action. He fights for robust federal investments in clean energy infrastructure to create family-supporting green jobs while preserving Wisconsin’s beautiful natural resources.

• High-Quality Public Education: Believing that a strong democracy starts in the classroom, Mark sponsors key legislation to increase federal funding for public schools, support educators, and expand access to affordable higher education and technical training.

• Fair Taxes and Corporate Accountability: Mark is committed to closing the tax loopholes that allow giant corporations to ship American jobs overseas and avoid paying their fair share. He will fight to ensure the wealthy pay their part to fund critical public services.

His position on key issues

• Healthcare for All: Mark believes that healthcare is a basic human right. He strongly supports Medicare for All and is dedicated to protecting and expanding programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security to ensure dignity for seniors and the vulnerable.

• Equality and LGBTQ+ Rights: As Co-Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus, Mark is a trailblazer for civil rights. He is committed to passing the Equality Act and dismantling discrimination in housing, employment, and healthcare.

• Protecting the Social Safety Net: Mark fights to strengthen vital programs—including unemployment compensation, disability assistance, and nutritional support—to ensure that illness or job loss does not result in a life sentence of poverty.

• Environmental Safeguards on AI and Data Centers: Mark is sounding the alarm on the massive energy and water demands of the state’s booming data center sector. He opposes letting corporations bypass vital environmental impact reviews, insisting that we must heavily regulate the industry, mandate closed-loop water conservation systems to protect Lake Michigan and local wetlands, and ensure the tech boom doesn’t drive up utility bills for everyday Wisconsinites.
