about Delia Ramirez

About Delia Ramirez

MoveOn is proud to endorse Delia Ramirez for Illinois’s 3rd Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

A lifelong Chicagoan and the daughter of Guatemalan immigrants, Delia Ramirez is a veteran social service administrator and community organizer who has spent nearly two decades fighting for working families. Before her historic election as the first Latina to represent the Midwest in Congress, she served as an Assistant Majority Leader in the Illinois House, where she passed landmark legislation to expand Medicaid and secured $450 million for affordable housing.

Delia is the only member of Congress in a mixed-status family, giving her a deeply personal perspective on the fight for justice. She has consistently refused corporate PAC money and remains a powerful, independent voice for her constituents, leading the charge to “defund the oligarchy” and invest in the needs of everyday people.

How she’ll help your community:

  • Housing as a Human Right: Championing the Green New Deal for Public Housing and introducing the Tenants’ Right to Organize Act to ensure every person has a safe, stable, and sustainable place to call home.

  • Workers’ Rights and Living Wages: Advocating for a $19/hour federal minimum wage and passing the PRO Act to empower unions and protect the dignity of all workers.

  • Education Equity: Fighting to eliminate student debt and providing tuition-free public college to ensure that a person’s zip code never determines their future.

  • Public Safety and Oversight: Leading the DHS Use of Force Oversight Act to ensure transparency and accountability while shifting resources toward community-based support systems.

Her positions on key issues:

  • Healthcare for All: Co-sponsoring the Medicare for All Act to guarantee that high-quality medical, dental, and reproductive care is a universal right, not a privilege for the wealthy.

  • Compassionate Immigration Reform: Leading the fight to abolish ICE, end profit-driven detention, and pass the American Dream and Promise Act to create a permanent pathway to citizenship.

  • Climate Justice: Implementing a Green New Deal to transition to 100% clean energy while creating high-paying, green union jobs in communities like those in IL-03.

  • Human Rights-Centered Foreign Policy: Advocating for peace and an end to unauthorized wars, including supporting an arms embargo to prevent human rights violations globally.

  • Democracy and Ethics: Demanding accountability for the “billionaire oligarchs” who buy influence and working to restore the Direct File Act for free and easy tax filing for all Americans.
