about Rashida Tlaib

MoveOn is proud to endorse Rep. Rashida Tlaib for reelection in Michigan’s 12th Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

Raised in Southwest Detroit in a proud working-class union household as the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, Rashida Tlaib learned early on the importance of community, service, and standing up for working people. As the eldest of 14 children, she has spent most of her life taking care of people. Known by her colleagues as “Mama Bear,” she considers herself a social worker at heart and brings that dedicated, empathetic approach directly to public service.

As a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Rashida has consistently fought against systems that hurt people and refuses to back down. She has secured more than $68 million in direct federal funding for her local communities. Her relentless advocacy has also resulted in billions of federal dollars being dedicated to water affordability, local infrastructure projects, and lead service line replacements.

How she’ll help your community:

  • Economic and Housing Justice: Rashida is committed to lowering costs for working families and fighting for systemic changes that treat housing as a stable, accessible right for everyone rather than a luxury.

  • Environmental Justice: A fierce advocate for public health, Rashida has worked tirelessly to deliver direct support through her neighborhood service centers, expand access to clean air and water, and eliminate environmental hazards like toxic lead service lines.

  • Racial and Immigration Justice: Coming from an immigrant family, Rashida champions policies that build safety, equity, and dignity for immigrant communities, fighting back against systemic discrimination and institutional barriers.

  • Gender Justice & LGBTQI+ Rights: Rashida stands hand-in-hand with grassroots movements to advocate for reproductive justice, equal rights, and protection against discrimination for women and LGBTQI+ individuals.

Her position on key issues

  • Healthcare for All: Rashida believes that high-quality healthcare is a fundamental human right, fighting passionately for healthcare equity and universal coverage so no one is left behind.

  • Human Rights Around the World: As the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, Rashida brings a deeply personal perspective to her advocacy for global human rights. She champions a foreign policy centered on international law, self-determination, and global equity, fighting to protect the dignity and human rights of all people across the globe.

  • Ending Corporate Influence: Rashida refuses to take a single dime from corporate PACs. She relies entirely on small-dollar grassroots donations, ensuring that she answers only to the working-class neighbors she represents.

  • Rooted in Community & Direct Service: True to her social worker background, Rashida prioritizes accessible governance by running localized neighborhood service centers that cut through red tape to deliver direct, everyday support directly to residents.
