about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

MoveOn is proud to endorse Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for reelection in New York’s 14th Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

Born in the Bronx, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has dedicated her life to community organizing and championing working-class families. After graduating from Boston University with a degree in international relations and economics, she returned to the Bronx to work as an Educational Director for the National Hispanic Institute and organize in her community. When the 2008 financial crisis hit and her family faced foreclosure following her father’s sudden passing, she pulled extra shifts working as a waitress and bartender—an experience that deeply rooted her commitment to economic justice.

In 2018, Alexandria launched a historic, grassroots campaign driven entirely by working people. Running without a dime of corporate PAC money, she shocked the political establishment by defeating a 10-term incumbent. Upon taking office at age 29, she became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Over her tenure, she has established herself as one of the most effective questioners in committee hearings, successfully holding powerful corporations accountable and bringing millions of dollars back to public hospitals, schools, and green jobs programs across the Bronx and Queens.

How she’ll help your community:

  • Housing as a Human Right: Alexandria believes every person deserves a safe, affordable place to live. She has introduced bold legislation like The Place to Prosper Act and the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act to protect tenants from unjust evictions, guarantee legal counsel during housing disputes, and invest heavily in upgrading and building carbon-zero affordable housing.

  • Dignity for All Workers: A fierce ally of organized labor, Alexandria advocates for a federal jobs guarantee, living-wage union positions, and strengthening the right to organize. She fights to ensure that federal policy values the economic security of everyday working people over corporate wealth.

  • Climate Action & Accountability: Alexandria championed and co-authored the Green New Deal resolution, sparking a national mobilization to fight climate change while creating millions of high-paying jobs. Her efforts helped secure the historic $369 billion federal climate investment, lowered energy costs for households, and successfully pushed for the creation of the American Climate Corps.

  • Investing in Our Future: Alexandria believes in leveling the playing field through robust public investment. She fights for the cancellation of student debt, the expansion of early childhood education and universal pre-K, and increased funding for public schools—ensuring that success is a right afforded to every child, regardless of their family’s economic background.

Her position on key issues

  • Healthcare for All: Alexandria is a leading proponent of Medicare for All, fighting to guarantee high-quality healthcare as a fundamental right. She has successfully fought to cap insulin prices at $35 per month for Medicare recipients and gave Medicare the power to negotiate lower prescription drug prices.

  • A Peace Economy: She advocates for a foreign policy centered on international diplomacy, human rights, and global peacemaking, firmly opposing “forever wars.” Alexandria campaigns to redirect public tax dollars away from global conflicts and into domestic infrastructure, education, and healthcare. A vocal defender of Palestinian human rights, she has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire, an end to the occupation, and the enforcement of U.S. laws like the Leahy Laws to block offensive weapons and unconditional military aid to the Israeli government, while demanding full humanitarian access to Gaza.

  • Immigration Justice: Beginning with her early work as an intern handling immigration cases for Senator Ted Kennedy, Alexandria has been a staunch advocate for immigrant neighbors. She supports establishing an honorable, accessible path to citizenship, expanding social safety nets to include undocumented residents, and restructuring federal immigration enforcement.

  • Economic Equity: Alexandria is committed to taking on corporate greed. She advocates for taxing the ultra-wealthy, closing loopholes used by tax evaders, and implementing policies like a 15% minimum tax rate on major corporations and a cap on credit card interest rates to combat billionaire-driven inequality.
