Leadership and Experience

Raised in Shonto, Arizona, Jonathan Nez has spent nearly two decades in dedicated public service, working at every level of local and sovereign governance to deliver results for rural and Indigenous communities. He began his career in public service at age 29 as Vice President of the Shonto Chapter, before being elected to the Navajo Nation Council and serving two terms on the Coconino County Board of Supervisors. He later served as Vice President of the Navajo Nation from 2015 to 2019, consistently advocating for local empowerment, transparency, and public health.

In 2019, Jonathan was elected President of the Navajo Nation, serving through 2023. During his presidency, he led his community through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with steady, evidence-based leadership. His administration secured essential funding for new healthcare facilities, expanded rural infrastructure—delivering running water, electricity, and broadband to thousands of unserved homes—and invested heavily in public safety and veterans’ housing. He is running for Congress to bring common-sense leadership, lived experience, and a relentless focus on rural working families to Washington.

How he’ll help your community:

• Lowering Everyday Costs: Jonathan understands the economic pressures on rural households. He will fight corporate price-gouging and advocate for federal measures to lower the costs of groceries, gas, prescription drugs, and childcare.

• Investing in Rural Infrastructure: Drawing on his record of bringing utilities to off-grid communities, Jonathan will fight for federal investments in clean water systems, grid modernization, paved roads, and high-speed broadband across rural Arizona.

• Protecting Water and Environment: A staunch defender of natural resources, Jonathan will prioritize water security, climate resilience, and sustainable development that safeguards public lands while respecting tribal sovereignty and local ecosystems.
