about Jahana Hayes

MoveOn is proud to endorse Rep. Jahana Hayes for reelection in Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

A community advocate, problem solver, and former public school educator, Jahana Hayes has spent her life fighting to ensure that no one is left behind. Having overcome poverty, homelessness, and teenage motherhood, her lived experiences uniquely inform her work in public service. She gained national recognition as the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, using her platform to advocate for student equity, school funding, and community engagement before being elected to represent Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District in 2018.

In Congress, Jahana serves on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and as Ranking Member of the Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition, Foreign Agriculture, and Horticulture. She has used her legislative seat to champion federal investments in public education, lead efforts to end hunger, protect local water resources, and deliver over $1 billion in infrastructure investments back to her district. She is running for re-election to continue bringing working-class representation, moral clarity, and progressive solutions to Washington.

How she’ll help your community:

  • Eradicating Food Insecurity: As a leader on the House Agriculture Committee, Jahana will continue to champion the expansion of SNAP, WIC, and universal school meal programs so no child or family goes hungry.

  • Championing Public Education & Teachers: Drawing on her background as National Teacher of the Year, Jahana fights to increase federal funding for public schools, expand Pell Grants, lower higher education costs, and guarantee equitable pay and resources for educators.

  • Protecting Workers & Labor Union Rights: A proud union member, Jahana strongly supports the PRO Act to safeguard workers’ rights to organize, strengthen collective bargaining, and build an economy that prioritizes working families over corporate profit.

  • Fighting Climate Change & Preserving Natural Spaces: Jahana champions green infrastructure, clean air initiatives, and environmental conservation, including successfully passing legislation to grant wild and scenic river protections to local Connecticut waterways.

Her position on key issues

  • Healthcare for All: Janelle stands firmly in defense of bodily autonomy and healthcare freedom. She is dedicated to fighting back against federal restrictions on healthcare and will consistently vote to protect and codify reproductive rights for women across the nation.

  • Protecting Reproductive Freedom: Recognizing homelessness as a critical crisis impacting local safety and economic health, Janelle supports comprehensive federal strategies that combine investments in affordable housing construction with localized support services to help individuals get back on their feet.

  • Housing Stability & Justice: Janelle views accessible healthcare as a fundamental necessity. She works to lower the cost of prescription drugs, shield patients from predatory medical billing, and expand healthcare infrastructure, with a particular focus on protecting rural healthcare access.

  • Comprehensive Immigration Reform: Janelle is focused on fixing what is broken in Washington by prioritizing people over corporate lobbyists. Her campaign is built on community-first accountability, transparency, and delivering tangible federal funding directly back to Oregon’s working families.
