about Janelle Bynum

MoveOn is proud to endorse Rep. Janelle Bynum for reelection in Oregons’s 5th Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

As a working mother of four, small businesswoman, engineer, and public servant, Janelle Bynum has spent her life delivering practical, common-sense solutions for Oregon families. Janelle earned her undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Florida A&M University and her MBA from the Ross Business School at the University of Michigan.Alongside her husband, she operates local family restaurants, gaining firsthand knowledge of how small businesses serve as the heartbeat and economic lifelines of local communities.

Before her election to the U.S. House of Representatives, Janelle served for eight years in the Oregon House of Representatives, where she chaired the Committee on Small Business and Economic Development. Known for her strong record of bipartisan results, she spearheaded legislative efforts that added $43 billion and over 6,000 jobs to Oregon’s economy while championing investments in education and voting access. In Congress, she continues to stand up against political games, operating as a pragmatic leader dedicated to ensuring working families have a seat at the decision-making table.

How she’ll help your community:

  • Strengthening the Economy and Creating Jobs: Drawing on her experience operating local restaurants, Janelle is a tireless advocate for small businesses. She has championed critical bipartisan legislation, including the Access to Small Business Investor Capital Act and the Expanding Access to Capital for Rural Job Creators Act, to help local entrepreneurs secure capital, grow their businesses, and keep good-paying jobs in Oregon.

  • Lowering the Cost of Housing and Living: Janelle understands the financial strains facing working families. She has introduced key bipartisan measures like the Accelerating Home Building Act to expand housing access and affordability, while actively pushing a comprehensive “Affordability Agenda” to curb junk fees and reduce the costs of daily essentials.

  • Addressing the Wildfire and Climate Crisis: Representing a region deeply affected by extreme weather, Janelle has led federal efforts on wildfire preparedness. She successfully advanced the bipartisan Wildfire Aerial Response Safety Act to support aerial firefighting operations, and co-led legislative fixes to shield wildfire victims from unfair taxation.

  • Improving Access to Education: As the daughter of teachers, Janelle is fiercely committed to public education. She champions robust federal funding to support local schools, improve classroom resources, and expand educational opportunities so that every child can thrive from early childhood through graduation.

Her position on key issues

  • Protecting Reproductive Rights: Janelle stands firmly in defense of bodily autonomy and healthcare freedom. She is dedicated to fighting back against federal restrictions on healthcare and will consistently vote to protect and codify reproductive rights for women across the nation.

  • Ending Homelessness: Recognizing homelessness as a critical crisis impacting local safety and economic health, Janelle supports comprehensive federal strategies that combine investments in affordable housing construction with localized support services to help individuals get back on their feet.

  • Lowering the Cost of Healthcare: Janelle views accessible healthcare as a fundamental necessity. She works to lower the cost of prescription drugs, shield patients from predatory medical billing, and expand healthcare infrastructure, with a particular focus on protecting rural healthcare access.

  • Standing Up to Corporate and Special Interests: Janelle is focused on fixing what is broken in Washington by prioritizing people over corporate lobbyists. Her campaign is built on community-first accountability, transparency, and delivering tangible federal funding directly back to Oregon’s working families.
