about Gabe Vasquez

MoveOn is proud to endorse Rep. Gabe Vasquez for reelection in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

A first-generation American who grew up in the borderlands, Gabe Vasquez has dedicated his career to public service, community advocacy, and creating opportunities for working families. Before his election to Congress, Gabe served on the Las Cruces City Council, where he worked to build a stronger local economy, champion public land conservation, and support working-class neighborhoods. His professional background also includes working in the outdoor recreation industry and serving as a staffer for U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich, where he focused on community outreach and natural resource protection.

Gabe made history by winning one of the most competitive House seats in the nation in 2022 and successfully defending it in 2024. In Congress, he brings a deep, personal understanding of the borderlands and a relentless commitment to bringing resources to New Mexico’s working families, family farms, and Native American communities.

How he’ll help your community:

  • Dignity for Working Families: Gabe is a strong advocate for labor and working people. He supports raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, passing the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act to safeguard unions, and repealing tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% to ensure corporations pay their fair share.

  • Protecting Public Lands & Waters: Drawing on his extensive background in conservation, Gabe fights tirelessly to protect New Mexico’s public lands, water, and wildlife, opposing any efforts to sell off public lands to corporate interests while boosting the local outdoor recreation economy.

  • Investing in Clean Energy: Gabe is committed to tackling the climate crisis, especially the severe droughts impacting New Mexico. He supports a transition to clean energy like wind and solar to create good-paying, local green jobs and reduce the pollution impacting children’s health.

  • Defending Reproductive Freedom: Gabe stands firmly against federal abortion bans and seeks to protect women’s healthcare, advocating for federal protections for abortion, birth control, and reproductive autonomy.

His position on key issues

  • Healthcare as a Right: Gabe believes every New Mexican deserves high-quality healthcare. He is fighting to lower prescription drug costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate prices, lowering the Medicare eligibility age to 55, adding dental and vision benefits, and establishing a robust public option.

  • Humane & Comprehensive Immigration Reform: Growing up on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, Gabe supports a humane, realistic approach to immigration. He advocates for a permanent path to citizenship for DREAMers and hard-working immigrant families while ensuring safe, secure, and modern border management.

  • Upholding Tribal Sovereignty: Gabe represents a diverse district that includes the Navajo Nation, Mescalero Apache, Fort Sill Apache, and several Pueblos. He is dedicated to honoring the federal government-to-government relationship and securing crucial funding for infrastructure, healthcare, and education in Native communities.

  • Ethics in Government: Gabe supports strict measures to crack down on insider trading by members of Congress, curb the influence of corporate lobbyists, and ensure public officials are held accountable to the people rather than personal financial interests.
