MoveOn Statement on Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s Retirement

WASHINGTON – In response to Speaker Emerita Pelosi’s announcement that she will not seek reelection, MoveOn Civic Action Executive Director Katie Bethell released the following statement:

“Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi has been a trailblazer in every sense—the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House and one of the most consequential legislative leaders in our nation’s history. Her steadfast commitment to protecting democracy, expanding opportunity, and advancing justice has improved the lives of millions of Americans.

“Pelosi has been an unwavering champion and friend to MoveOn since our earliest days. From shepherding landmark legislation such as the Affordable Care Act to leading the fight to blunt the dangerous rise of authoritarianism and right-wing power in our country, Speaker Emerita Pelosi’s vision and discipline have defined an era of progress and perseverance. Her ability to unite diverse voices and deliver results reflects not only her political skill but also her deep respect for the institution of Congress and the people it serves.

“MoveOn members are grateful for her leadership, allyship, determination, and fortitude.”
