Join NowWashington, D.C. – As part of its “F*ck the Fees” initiative, MoveOn is launching a website to advocate with and for working families impacted by predatory junk fees. The site features a “junk fee calculator” which asks consumers a series of relevant questions used to estimate how much in junk fees an individual has paid in one year. MoveOn members are calling on Congress and federal agencies to regulate and force corporations to offer more transparency over these deceptive fees.
“In nearly every industry, from housing to banking to travel, junk fees are squeezing Americans in their daily lives, especially those facing economic hardship. We’ll continue our push with Congress to hold corporations accountable for taking advantage of consumers with these excessive charges,” said MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting.
MoveOn’s “F*ck the Fees” initiative backs the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to end junk fees, and urges Congress and federal agencies to do the same. At least 85% of Americans have experienced a hidden or unexpected fee for a service in the past two years, and one-third of Americans say they’ve spent $100 or more on unexpected or hidden fees on the bills they regularly pay over the past decade. These “junk fees” affect everyday Americans in every aspect of their life, including housing, automobile purchases, banking, travel, and essential retail purchases. They disproportionately affect low-income households and people of color, exacerbating economic inequalities.
The majority of Americans across party lines – 85 percent of Democrats, 77 percent of Independents, and 74 percent of Republicans – are in favor of transparent legislation that addresses these outrageous fees.
