What is MoveOn™?

MoveOn is a community of more than 8 million Americans from all walks of life who use innovative technology to lead, participate in, and win campaigns for progressive change.

For over 14 years, the MoveOn family of organizations have used online tools to lower the barriers to participation in our democracy, so real Americans have a voice in a political process where big money and corporate lobbyists wield too much influence. Increasingly, MoveOn members and progressives are stepping up as the leaders of their own campaigns for social change, using MoveOn’s cutting-edge technology, such as MoveOn Petitions, to tap into our collective people power by enlisting other MoveOn members’ support.

The MoveOn family of organizations is not-for-profit and funded by small dollar donations from our more than 8 million members — no corporate contributions, no big checks from CEOs. And our tiny staff ensures that small contributions go a long way.

Our MoveOn family is made up of a couple of different pieces. MoveOn.org Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, focuses on education and advocacy, providing civic engagement tools to the public and building the progressive movement by encouraging and supporting the development of more grassroots leaders. MoveOn.org Political Action, a federal PAC, is focused on demonstrating MoveOn members’ power at the ballot box and electing candidates who reflect MoveOn members’ values.

I can’t thank you enough for providing the tools I’ve always wanted for social change. With MoveOn, I feel like I have a voice in the world and an organization fighting for the same things that are important to me. As a working professional and mother, I don’t have time to look up whom to contact on what issues. You make it possible for me to fight against the infuriating things that I see either destroying or about to destroy our country.

Thank you all at MoveOn.org for your vision and your work.

Sincerely,
Laurie (Matawan, NJ)

A short history

MoveOn.org was started by Joan Blades and Wes Boyd, two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. Although neither had experience in politics, they shared deep frustration with the partisan warfare in Washington D.C. and the ridiculous waste of our nation’s focus at the time of the Clinton impeachment mess. On September 18, 1998, they launched an online petition to “Censure President Clinton and Move On to Pressing Issues Facing the Nation.” Within days they had hundreds of thousands of individuals signed up, and began looking for ways these voices could be heard.

By the next month, MoveOn PAC, now known as MoveOn.org Political Action, was formed as a political action committee so that like-minded, concerned citizens could influence the outcome of congressional elections, and in turn, the balance of power in Washington, D.C.

Over the past 14 years, MoveOn members have worked together to play a leading role in ending the war in Iraq, helping to pass landmark legislation such as health care reform, and fighting for economic fairness. MoveOn members have been part of game-changing electoral victories, including the 2006 Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives, and the election and re-election of President Obama.

About MoveOn.org Civic Action

MoveOn.org Civic Action, a nonprofit educational and advocacy organization, set up in 2001, is home to MoveOn’s public education efforts and issue advocacy campaigns as well as many of the online tools MoveOn makes available to progressives across the country.

We are currently focusing on what we call our Million Leaders strategy — an audacious plan to unleash progressive people power by encouraging and supporting MoveOn members and other progressives to step up as the leaders of their own campaigns for social change. This strategy includes MoveOn Petitions, our online petition tool that empowers you to lead and win your own MoveOn-style campaigns.

About MoveOn.org Political Action

MoveOn.org Political Action represents the collective will of MoveOn’s more than 8 million members at the ballot box by helping to elect progressive candidates to office and defeat candidates who stand in the way of progress.

But in contrast to most PACs, which funnel industry contributions to candidates in exchange for access, MoveOn.org Political Action bundles hundreds of thousands of small donors together to elect progressive candidates who will represent the American people. In fact, the average donation to MoveOn.org Political Action is less than $20.
