Jayapal has helped pass both the $15 minimum wage and paid sick days in Seattle. Prior to her election, Jayapal spent two decades as a leading civil rights activist, most recently serving as executive director of the immigrant and refugee advocacy organization OneAmerica, which she founded after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Jayapal immigrated to the U.S. from India at 16 to attend Georgetown University; she later earned an MBA from Northwestern University. Read more about Jayapal here.
