TUES: Drag Stars Join Lawmakers and MoveOn to Advocate for LGBTQ+ Rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As reported in The Hill, on Tuesday, June 25, MoveOn Political Action will be joined by drag stars Jiggly Caliente, Brigitte Bandit, and Joey Jay at a Drag Lobby Day rally to champion the Equality Act and the Transgender Bill of Rights—while combating the continued narrative and legislative attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. They’ll also be joined by LGBTQ+ advocates, including Representative Jasmine Crockett (TX–30). With more than 500 anti-gay and anti-trans laws introduced at the state and federal level this year, MoveOn members and partners are demanding action be taken to address right-wing bigotry and to protect the LGBTQ+ community.

The lobby day comes on the heels of new polling out today from Navigator Research finding that a healthy majority of Americans across the political spectrum support federal legislation protecting LGTBQ+ individuals from discrimination, and oppose elected officials who aim to restrict these freedoms or would ban health care for transgender people. After lobbying members of Congress and their staff to address hate and discrimination, drag stars will convene for a rally.

MoveOn members have been fiercely advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and bringing heightened attention during Pride Month. More than 150,000 members have signed a MoveOn petition demanding that Target restock its Pride merchandise in all stores to support queer creators and consumers. Additionally, following recent reports warning of threats to Pride events, more than 13,000 MoveOn members have signed a petition from Qommittee for Drag calling on federal law enforcement agencies to monitor and protect against these threats. MoveOn members want to send the message that hate has no place during Pride or anytime.

MoveOn is celebrating 25 years of people-powered progress this year. For more than a generation, MoveOn has built independent political power and mobilized the left to elect Democrats and enact progressive change. MoveOn is a bulwark against the radical right, channeling our collective voices to drive progressive foreign policy, protect democracy, and advance justice for all.
