WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling blocking President Trump’s attempts to restrict mail-in voting, MoveOn Political Action Chief Communications Officer Joel Payne released the following statement:

“Only an authoritarian government afraid of being held accountable tries to make it as hard as possible for people to vote. Donald Trump may have failed this time, but this was still a clear attempt to sow doubt in our elections and lay the groundwork to contest the election if Republicans lose. He must commit to free and fair elections for every eligible voter.

Americans are fed up with the failures of this president and Republicans in Congress, and MoveOn will continue to mobilize members to vote early and in record numbers so Trump can’t get away with challenging the results of the election.”

Under the Trump administration’s proposed changes, the United States Postal Service (USPS) would not have delivered mail ballots in states that do not provide voter data. States would have been required to upload that voter data through a government portal that is not yet live. The new rules also could have caused ballot delivery delays by requiring counties and municipalities to reprint their ballots to include a special barcode, which would also require a special printer that many counties and municipalities do not have. Several courts, including the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals, had stepped in and found the new rules are not legal.
