MoveOn’s Michigan Operation Generated More Than 600,000 Voter and Member Contacts to Help Power El-Sayed Victory

Group placed 180,000 calls, delivered more than 450,000 member communications, and invested $90,000 in ads and mail supporting El-Sayed

MICHIGAN—MoveOn Political Action mobilized a major statewide organizing and communications operation to help Dr. Abdul El-Sayed overcome more than $63 million in outside spending and win the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan.

MoveOn’s campaign generated more than 600,000 voter and member contacts through calls, texts, emails, mail, digital advertising, and volunteer organizing. The effort was part of MoveOn Political Action’s largest intervention in Democratic primaries to date and drew on the strength of more than 200,000 active MoveOn members in Michigan.

“Abdul El-Sayed’s victory showed what is possible when a bold candidate and a powerful grassroots movement take on corporate and pro-war spending together,” said MoveOn Political Action Chief Communications Officer Joel Payne. “MoveOn members made calls, knocked doors, opened their inboxes, talked to their neighbors, and helped deliver a clear message across Michigan that voters want leaders who will lower costs, stand up to big money, and fight for working people.”

MoveOn’s Michigan campaign included:

  • 180,000 calls placed to MoveOn members and targeted voters across Michigan;
  • More than 450,000 member contacts, including 376,017 emails and 86,076 text messages;
  • 1,000 volunteer hours supporting calls, canvassing, and voter outreach;
  • $90,000 invested in digital advertising and direct mail;
  • A digital advertising campaign reaching 60,000 young Black, Latino, and white women voters;
  • Five billboards across Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Lansing;
  • A moneybooth event calling out Haley Stevens’ pro-war and pro-Trump connections

The campaign centered on El-Sayed’s commitment to lowering costs, expanding health care, ending costly wars, and reducing the influence of corporate money in politics.

MoveOn members will now turn their organizing power toward defeating Republican nominee Mike Rogers and electing El-Sayed to the U.S. Senate in November.

El-Sayed’s victory was one of several Michigan wins for candidates running on economic populism and rejecting corporate and AIPAC money. In Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, MoveOn-endorsed candidate William Lawrence advanced to the general election following a campaign supported by more than 60,000 MoveOn calls, direct mail, and targeted digital advertising.
