MoveOn: Will House Republicans Cut Medicaid Spending for Billionaire Tax Cuts?

CBO Analysis: Republicans’ Reconciliation Package Cuts Health Care Spending by $715 Billion, 13.7 Million Uninsured Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Over the weekend, an independent analysis from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) revealed that House Republicans’ reconciliation package will slash at least $715 billion and will result in at least 8.6 million more Americans going uninsured due to Medicaid and Affordable Care Act cuts.

Millions of people will lose their health care so Republicans in Congress can hand out billionaire tax breaks. People rely on Medicaid to survive, but congressional Republicans care more about staying in President Trump’s good graces than protecting their own constituents’ lives. MoveOn members will be watching closely to see whom Republicans side with: their millions of constituents or President Trump and billionaires,” said MoveOn Political Action spokesperson Britt Jacovich.

Americans rely on Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage—especially those in states and districts represented by congressional Republicans. Below is a breakdown of constituents in each vulnerable district who are covered by Medicaid/CHIP (source):

  • Rep. Michael Lawler (NY-17): 189,447 constituents
  • Rep. Kenneth Calvert (CA-41): 186,113 constituents
  • Rep. Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06): 131,895 constituents
  • Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02): 113,416 constituents
  • Rep. Jennifer Kiggans (VA-02): 104,225 constituents
  • Rep. David Schweikert (AZ-01): 97,979 constituents

MoveOn members have made thousands of calls and sent letters and emails urging their elected officials to speak out against any potential Medicaid cuts and to do everything in their power to help stop them. More than 40,000 people and counting have signed the petition telling Congress to protect Medicaid funding instead of passing billionaire tax cuts.
