MoveOn Reacts to Chicago Mayoral Election Results
Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, responded to news that progressive challenger Jesús “Chuy” García had forced Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel into a runoff:
“Tonight’s results are a huge win for progressives and working families across Chicago. Rahm Emanuel’s millions of dollars weren’t enough to whitewash his record of siding with big-money corporate interests over regular people. The fact that a majority of Chicagoans voted for change is a clear rejection of Mayor Emanuel’s policies that have left too many behind.
“MoveOn.org endorsed Jesús ‘Chuy’ García after a vote of our more than 75,000 members in Chicago. Since our endorsement, two MoveOn staff on the ground in the city have worked tirelessly to mobilize volunteers and turn out the progressive vote. We believe the April runoff election is winnable, and tomorrow morning we will redouble our efforts in support of Chuy García and his cause of making Chicago work for all of its residents—not just the wealthiest few.”
