MoveOn Petition Calls for Justice Clarence Thomas to Recuse Himself from Trump Immunity Case

Over 165k Say Thomas Is Unfit to Preside on any Trump Trial Due to Conflicts of Interest

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A MoveOn petition is calling for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from any cases involving former President Donald Trump, and for stronger ethics rules to be enacted for the Court. The petition, as of this writing, has been signed by more than 165,000 people.

The petition argues Justice Thomas’s wife, Ginni, supported the January 6th “Stop the Steal” rally and played a key role in the scheme to overturn the 2020 election, and thus he should not be allowed to rule on a case that has clear, personal ramifications. If the Supreme Court were to rule that Trump doesn’t have absolute immunity from his crimes, Special Counsel Jack Smith’s federal election crimes investigation will be able to move to trial and could potentially reveal more evidence implicating the Thomases around the January 6th events.

“For the Supreme Court to consider these cases with any impartiality, it’s critical that justices with conflicts of interest recuse themselves. That applies first and foremost to Justice Clarence Thomas, whose own wife played a role in Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election,” said MoveOn Campaign Director Alexis Martinez. “Corruption on the Supreme Court has gotten out of control, and Justice Thomas is the poster child of why more work needs to be done to stop outside interests influencing the Bench. Robust ethics reform must start with Thomas’s recusal, and should continue with efforts to rebalance the Court, impeachment of corrupt justices, and passing other reforms that restore the integrity of our judicial system.”

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments for Trump’s “absolute immunity” case on April 25.

In February, MoveOn Political Action commissioned a mobile billboard with the message “Recuse Clarence,” and circulated it throughout Washington, D.C. as part of a grassroots push to pressure Justice Clarence Thomas to remove himself from ruling on the Trump v. Anderson case.
