Statement: MoveOn on Violence at Trump Events

Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, responded to video of a protestor at a Donald Trump rally being punched in the face in North Carolina on Wednesday:

“The footage of a Trump supporter punching a nonviolent protestor in the face is deeply disturbing. This shameful and disgusting act is just the latest in a pattern of violence at Trump’s rallies that’s been incited by the candidate himself. And shame on the officers who forcefully detained the protestor rather than the person who committed the assault. Racism, misogyny, and xenophobia are at the center of Trump’s campaign, as is a fascist inclination to authoritarianism, violence, and disregard for the Constitution. Trump’s candidacy represents a clear and present danger to our democracy, our freedoms, and the values and pluralism that make America great. We must not let him anywhere near the Oval Office.”
