MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting Responds to Senator Joe Manchin’s List of Demands for Voting Rights Legislation

Washington, D.C. — Today, Rahna Epting, the executive director of MoveOn, released the following statement on news that Senator Joe Manchin is working with Democrats to change critical voting rights legislation:

“Our democracy is under daily attack from forces seeking to destroy it for their own political gain. It started long before January 6th and it has continued more than six months after the attack on the Capitol.

“Let’s be clear, this is a five alarm fire for our democracy. From attacking the right to vote, to lying daily about the last election, to fake audits in states, to refusing to allow a non-partisan investigation into the greatest attack on our homeland since 9/11 Republicans have opened a multi-front war on our democracy.

“The historic voting rights legislation currently before Congress is an important first step in fighting back against this attack on our democracy and defending the right to vote for every American.

“Democrats haven’t made this a partisan issue. Mitch McConnell and right-wing legislatures across the country have. We are pleased Senator Manchin is continuing to negotiate on these bills. But compromise can not mean we can entertain voter restrictions that have long been driven by lies about the integrity of our election and intentionally disenfranchise Black and brown voters.

“Congress, including Sen. Manchin, should act with the urgency this moment demands. This is a five alarm fire. It is time Congress acts like it.”
