MoveOn 2020 Straw Poll: Field Wide Open; Members Want Strong Progressive Voice To Challenge Trump

Group To Hold Series Of Events In Early 2019 In Early Primary States To Allow Candidates To Present Big Bold Ideas

WASHINGTON, DC — The results of MoveOn’s first membership-wide straw poll and survey for the 2020 presidential elections found that support from its membership is up for grabs among a wide and diverse field and that its members want a strong progressive voice to counter Trump. MoveOn also announced today that the group will hold a series of events in early primary states in the first part of 2019 to allow the presidential candidates to offer big bold ideas and win over support of MoveOn members and activists in those states and across the country.

MoveOn is not endorsing a presidential candidate at this time, and any endorsement will ultimately follow a formal member voting process, but the straw poll helps illuminate what progressive voters are looking for as the 2020 presidential primary gets underway.

According to MoveOn’s straw poll, the plurality of MoveOn members was undecided on who they will support in 2020, or are supporting a candidate not listed in the poll. The top candidates included: Beto O’Rourke (15.6%), Joe Biden (14.9%), Bernie Sanders (13.1%), Kamala Harris (10%) and Elizabeth Warren (6.4%).

The top factors MoveOn members said they were looking for in candidates are those who inspire the public with deep progressive values and will move us toward a more progressive future where everyone can thrive (63.4%) and who make the connections between racial, social, and economic injustice and commit to platform positions to see these connections through (54.3%).

“While the race for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president remains wide open and MoveOn’s endorsement is up for grabs, MoveOn members and progressives across the country are clear: They’re looking for candidates who will rally voters around a progressive vision of building a country where every American can thrive—whether we’re white, Black, or brown, rich or poor,“ said Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn Political Action. “We’ll be challenging prospective candidates to inspire us with big ideas in the months to come—including at a series of events in early voting states in early 2019.”
