about Ro Khanna

MoveOn is proud to endorse Rep. Ro Khanna for reelection in California’s 17th Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

Representing the heart of Silicon Valley, Representative Ro Khanna is a progressive voice dedicated to creating a strong, inclusive 21st-century economy where nobody is left behind. Before holding elected office, he served as a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Stanford University and an Adjunct Professor at Santa Clara Law School. His executive experience includes a presidential appointment by Barack Obama in 2009 to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he organized clean technology trade missions and served on the White House Business Council.

In Congress, Ro has served as the Chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on the Environment and Deputy Whip of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. His commitment to public service is deeply rooted in his family’s history; his grandfather participated in Gandhi’s independence movement in India, spending years in jail for promoting human rights, inspiring Ro to fight for opportunity and fairness for all. He holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Chicago and a law degree from Yale University.

How he’ll help your community:

  • Creating 21st-Century Jobs: Ro is focused on creating technology and manufacturing jobs across America. He authored the Endless Frontier Act, which formed the basis for the CHIPS and Science Act, to ensure the U.S. remains a global leader in science, innovation, and advanced manufacturing.

  • Retraining & Support for Working Families: Ro is committed to supporting mid-career workers by expanding public-private partnerships at community colleges and investing in retraining programs. He champions raising the federal minimum wage to $15, indexing it to inflation, and implementing mandatory paid sick days.

  • Climate Action & Environment: As a leader on climate, Ro brought fossil fuel executives before Congress to testify under oath about climate disinformation. He advocates for investing in clean technology, developing alternative energy to reduce our carbon footprint, and holding local polluters accountable.

  • Getting Big Money Out of Politics: Ro refuses to let special interests control Washington. He actively champions progressive legislation to ban PAC and lobbyist money, working to ensure the government is transparent, efficient, and responsive to ordinary citizens.

His position on key issues

  • Healthcare for All: Ro is an original co-sponsor of progressive legislation to establish Medicare for All. He fights to eliminate pharmaceutical price gouging, allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices, and lower overall healthcare costs for families.

  • Education Opportunities: He advocates for making higher education accessible by providing debt-free college through federal grants, expanding apprenticeships, and increasing vocational training opportunities.

  • Immigration Justice: Believing that immigration reform and economic growth go hand-in-hand, Ro supports comprehensive immigration reform, a direct pathway to citizenship for DREAMers and undocumented adults, and the preservation of family reunification visas.

  • Protecting Rights for All: Ro holds a 100% pro-choice record and has served on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. He is also a fierce defender of LGBTQ rights, fighting to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and protect vulnerable youth.
