Have you heard the federal government is on the brink of shutting down again?
Moments like this can be confusing.
But let’s be perfectly clear about what’s happening here: Republicans are so hell-bent on jacking up costs and taking away health care from millions of working people, that they are willing to shut down the government to do so.
Millions of Americans are relying on Congress to keep health care costs low by voting to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies that will lower premiums. Health insurance companies that offer ACA marketplace plans want to raise premiums by a median rate of 18%, and in some cases even higher! To mitigate price hikes, Congress has approved subsidies to keep costs lower for working families.
These subsidies have been a lifeline for families in our community and across the country. If Congress allows these subsidies to expire, more than 4 million Americans will be forced to become uninsured and households could see their premiums increase by $700 or more per year.
Small businesses and folks who work for small businesses are about to get screwed over because they make up the majority of ACA marketplace consumers who benefit from these subsidies. Everyday people will feel the burden of these subsidies expiring and many will be forced to decide between life-saving health care or paying for their groceries.
Ignore the finger-pointing and blame game from the MAGA crowd. Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House. If the government shuts down, the blame lies squarely on them.
In a time of disinformation, muddied messages, and partisan spin, the most reliable way to gauge a party’s priorities is through its budget. Republicans are showing us they would rather eliminate tax credits for our health care to give the ultra wealthy even more tax breaks!
They have repeatedly shown they are unwilling to come to the table and negotiate a deal with Democrats in Congress that includes the interests of working people. Republicans want to shut the government down because they’d rather make billionaires richer than lower the costs of skyrocketing health care and help sick people get the care they need. Democratic leaders are right to use their leverage to draw a line in the sand on health care for tens of millions of Americans.
Congressional Democrats don’t want the government to shut down, but they can’t even get Republicans to meet with them in good faith.
That’s because they are not serious about negotiating with Democrats, and they never were. Let’s remember this is the party that took a wrecking ball to the government earlier this year and then gutted Medicare and essential food programs. The American people cannot trust Trump and Republicans. Donald Trump and Republicans are using the government’s power to play political games, hoard power, silence enemies, and reward billionaires.
So, we need to make our voices heard. We must be loud and impossible to ignore.
