BREAKING: Sister Helen Prejean on Ivan Cantu’s Execution

HUNTSVILLE, TX – In response to the state of Texas executing Ivan Cantu tonight, in light of damning evidence that poured doubt on the prosecution’s evidence used to convict Cantu back in 2021 and an outpouring of public support for his case to be reopened, Cantu’s spiritual adviser and advocate Sister Helen Prejean shared the following statement:

“My main mission has been to offer spiritual guidance to Ivan Cantu and publicly share the injustice of this execution. We took up the cause of this man because mistakes were made at his trial. And we have a deficient and flawed appeal system that refused to review the substantive issues in this case.

“Ivan is a very brave man. In the final hours of his life, I granted Ivan peace as he readied himself to die.

“Ivan initiated more avenues in the pursuit of his exoneration than any single person I’ve counseled on death row.

“Ivan was grateful for everyone who supported him in his fight for a fair trial. Remember, by speaking up and taking action for Ivan together, we are bending the arc toward justice and are one step closer to ending the death penalty.”
