Michigan voters reject more than $63 million in corporate and pro-war spending, deliver major victory for people-powered politics
MICHIGAN—Dr. Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan, overcoming more than $63 million spent by corporate interests, dark money groups, and pro-war organizations backing his opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens.
El-Sayed’s victory is a triumph for bold progressives and people-powered movements over the corporate-backed, pro-war wing of the Democratic Party. His campaign showed that a populist message focused on affordability, ending costly wars, and getting big money out of politics can both electrify voters and win.
“Michigan voters sent a clear message that their votes are not for sale,” said MoveOn Political Action Chief Communications Officer Joel Payne. “Abdul El-Sayed took on more than $63 million in corporate and pro-war spending and won by promising to put money back in people’s pockets, end money in politics, and stand against costly wars. He proved that an agenda focused on affordability and standing up to big money is exactly the kind of message and leadership the Democratic Party needs to compete, rebuild trust, and win.”
MoveOn Political Action’s endorsement and support of El-Sayed was a central part of its largest intervention in Democratic primaries to date. With more than 200,000 active members in Michigan, the group launched billboards, a digital ad targeting young voters, a moneybooth event calling out Stevens’ pro-war and pro-Trump connections, mailers, member-to-member phone banks, get-out-the-vote efforts, and volunteer canvassing events across the state.
MoveOn members will continue organizing to defeat Republican nominee Mike Rogers and elect El-Sayed in November.
El-Sayed’s victory is one of a number of wins for populist candidates who rejected corporate and AIPAC money and centered their campaigns on affordability, healthcare, and working families.
In Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, MoveOn endorsed William Lawrence defeated establishment opposition to carry forth his economic populist agenda to the general election. MoveOn Political Action backed Lawrence with more than 60,000 phone calls to voters, a mailer, and a digital ad targeting key voters in the district. With the full support of MoveOn, Lawrence will take on Republican incumbent Tom Barrett in the general election.
