Leadership and Experience

With three decades of experience as a community organizer, urban planner, and public servant, Brad Lander has dedicated his career to fighting for New York’s working families. Most recently, as the New York City Comptroller, he served as the city’s chief financial officer, where he managed nearly $250 billion in pension assets and used the power of the office to hold corporations accountable and protect workers’ rights.

Before becoming Comptroller, Brad served for 12 years in the New York City Council, where he co-founded the Progressive Caucus and pioneered transformative policies like participatory budgeting. His career began in the nonprofit sector, leading the Fifth Avenue Committee to build and preserve affordable housing. He is now running for Congress to bring his deep policy expertise and record of “inside-outside” organizing to Washington.

How he’ll help your community:

• Housing as a Human Right: Drawing on his background as an urban planner, Brad will fight to end street homelessness, fix public housing, and expand federal support for affordable home construction.

• Dignity for All Workers: A lifelong champion for labor, Brad will push to increase the federal minimum wage and strengthen the right to organize, building on his success winning living wages for NYC gig workers and delivery drivers.

• Climate Action & Accountability: Brad led the charge to divest NYC’s pension funds from fossil fuels. In Congress, he will advocate for a Green New Deal to transition to a clean energy economy and achieve net-zero emissions.

• Protecting Democracy: Brad is committed to building a Democratic Party that stands up to corporate lobbyists and authoritarian threats, ensuring the government delivers for people rather than the wealthy few.

His position on key issues

• Healthcare for All: Brad is a strong supporter of Medicare for All and will fight to ensure that healthcare is treated as a fundamental right, not a privilege.

• Bridges, Not Bombs: He advocates for a foreign policy centered on human rights, international norms, and global peacemaking, opposing “forever wars” and the use of tax dollars to fund human rights violations.
