about William Lawrence

MoveOn is proud to endorse William Lawrence for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

With over a decade of experience as an accomplished community organizer and coalition-builder, William “Will” Lawrence has dedicated his life to fighting for working families. He is an original co-founder of the national Sunrise Movement, where his strategic leadership helped propel climate action and the Green New Deal onto the national stage. His local and federal work has successfully passed laws to build affordable housing, lower energy bills, and invest in union manufacturing in Mid-Michigan.

Closer to home, Will is deeply rooted in his community, having been raised in East Lansing and graduating from Swarthmore College before moving back to Mid-Michigan. Locally, he is widely recognized for his frontline housing advocacy. He founded the Mid-Michigan Tenant Resource Center and served as a coordinator for the Michigan Rent Is Too Damn High coalition, a powerful tenant union. He is running for Congress as a Democrat to unseat Republican Tom Barrett, bringing a record of grassroots, independent organizing that refuses to be bought by corporate money or DC insiders.

How he’ll help your community:

  • Making Housing Affordable: Believing that the rent and mortgages are too damn high, Will advocates for major federal investment in quality housing at all price points. He is a strong supporter of the mixed-income housing model and a federal tenant bill of rights to protect residents from corporate, Wall Street price-gouging landlords.

  • Ending Homelessness: Will views the rise of homelessness as a national disgrace. He champions a “Housing First” approach, pushing for rapid rehousing, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing as the essential foundation for people to rebuild stable lives.

  • Guaranteeing Healthcare: Will firmly believes that every family deserves quality medical care without the burden of corporate profit-seeking. Backed by National Nurses United, he will fight to take the profit motive out of health insurance and ensure healthcare is a guaranteed right.

  • Caring for Mental Health: Recognizing how economic insecurity and social fracturing drive anxiety and depression, Will opposes cuts to essential mental health services. He will advocate for federal investment in community care to stitch the local social fabric back together.

His position on key issues

  • Healthcare for All: Will is a strong advocate for Medicare for All, aiming to lower healthcare costs and stop Big Pharma and Big Insurance from denying critical care to families.

  • Green New Deal: As a climate movement leader, Will supports transitioning to an economy powered by clean energy while building up local union manufacturing and lowering household energy bills.

  • Putting People First: He is committed to taking on billionaire-driven inequality and corporate influence, standing up to the wealthy few to ensure the federal government delivers for everyday people.

  • Ending Endless Wars: Backed by progressive leaders who praise his courage, Will opposes out-of-touch, elite politics and supports a foreign policy focused on stopping endless wars.
