WASHINGTON – In response to President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s escalations in Venezuela, MoveOn Civic Action spokesperson Joel Payne released the following statement:
“The American people did not vote for an illegal and taxpayer-funded forever war. There was no declaration of war and no legal justification for invading a sovereign country like Venezuela unprovoked, even against a dictator like Nicolás Maduro who has abused his people.
This dangerous escalation will put our troops and civilians in needless danger, and will make America and the world less safe. We’ve seen how these types of ill-advised and unnecessary regime change operations work out: more death, more destabilization, and more expensive, forever wars — something President Trump disingenuously campaigned on bringing to an end.
MoveOn members remain as committed today as we were 26 years ago to opposing endless and unnecessary wars. Congress must do its job and rein in Trump’s gross — and deadly — abuse of power.”
