How to start a food drive
The best way to support your community during this time is to start a food drive. Here are some simple steps to get you started:
- Do your research. Take a look at local mutual aid groups and food banks in your area to see if there is an existing food drive in your community that you can support.
-
Coordinate locally. If there isn’t an existing food drive in your area, reach out to groups who can help you identify your community’s needs. Some communities may need more canned goods, while others need community fridges stocked with fresh produce. Connect with your local experts to fill the most critical gaps.
In addition to unexpired and unopened canned vegetables, fruits, and proteins, here are some examples of items that are usually in demand at local food pantries:
Grains
Pasta
Rice
Oatmeal
Cereal
Baby Necessities
Formula
Diapers
Baby food
Household Items
Laundry detergent
Toilet paper
Pet food
Baking
Cooking oil
Flour
Sugar
Baking powder/soda
Shelf-stable milk
Personal Care Items
Toothpaste
Shampoo
Soap
Deodorant
Menstrual health products
- Get help. Gather a team of friends who can donate their time to help spread the word, gather and organize contributions, and distribute or deliver items appropriately.
- Communicate broadly. Get on social, on the phone, or out in your community to spread the word. Be informative: Make sure folks know exactly what you need and how to get it to you. Remind folks that every bit helps, and encourage contributions of all sizes.
- Share your impact. Use #SNAPMatters and tag @MoveOn to share photos on social media of your community coming together to make a difference! Please be respectful and do not post photos of people receiving aid unless you’re given permission first!
