Join NowWASHINGTON – In response to the devastating collision last night, MoveOn Civic Action Chief Communications Officer Joel Payne issued the following statement:
“We are devastated by the heartbreaking crash in the Potomac River and mourn the lives lost. As we grieve with the families of those affected, we also express gratitude for air safety professionals who keep our skies safe and first responders who have been on the scene for hours in an effort to rescue the victims of this tragedy.
“We need to learn more about what happened and how to prevent this type of catastrophe in the future. But one thing is for sure—our air safety and disaster response relies on the same type of federal funding and resources that Donald Trump and his right-wing billionaire backers like Elon Musk have been moving to cut.
“In fact, in the 10 days since Trump’s inauguration, his administration froze the hiring of additional air traffic controllers, gutted key air safety protections, and fired FAA leadership to the benefit of Musk’s business interests. This also comes hours after the Trump administration illegally threatened to pull federal funding from a number of critical programs that Americans rely upon.
“There are real consequences for the American people from the chaos and mismanagement that we have already seen since Trump took office. As we work to learn the lessons of this tragedy, Trump, his allies, and his administration must end their assault on the public services that are essential to keeping us safe.”
