MoveOn statement on Obama proposing to expand Social Security benefits

Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, responded to President Obama’s statement in support of expanding Social Security:

“MoveOn members nationwide applaud President Obama’s call to expand Social Security, a significant new policy and a testament to work of grassroots activists who changed our national dialogue from one of ‘grand bargains’ that hurt seniors to one of asking everyone to contribute their fair share so Social Security benefits are sufficient to keep seniors out of poverty.

“Progressives have made Social Security a defining issue of the time and of this election. The overwhelming majority of Americans support strengthening and expanding the social safety net, including increasing Social Security benefits. For years, MoveOn members and our allies have fought against proposed cuts while supporting Democrats who stood with the majority of Americans and called for expanding Social Security benefits.

“Any elected official or candidate who wants the support of American voters must clearly commit to expanding our social safety net and asking billionaires to pay their fair share.”
