Endangered orcas in the Pacific Northwest faced a serious threat when anti-environmental agribusiness groups petitioned to strip their Endangered Species Act protections, making the unscientific claim that all orcas were the same and the southern resident killer whales didn’t need protection. Steve Mashuda of the organization Earthjustice created a MoveOn petition to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), demanding continued ESA protections for the orcas. After more than 61,000 MoveOn members signed the petition, the NMFS denied the agribusiness petition and elected to maintain ESA protections for Northwest orcas.
