Join NowWASHINGTON — Washington members of MoveOn.org Political Action have voted to endorse progressive champion Pramila Jayapal in the U.S. House race in the state’s 7th District with 69% of votes cast in favor of backing Jayapal. Fellow Democratic candidates Joe McDermott and Brady Walkinshaw received 20% and 11% of votes, respectively.
Jayapal currently serves in the Washington State Senate, where she represents one of the nation’s most racially and economically diverse districts. Jayapal has helped pass both the $15 minimum wage and paid sick days in Seattle. Prior to her election, Jayapal spent two decades as a leading civil rights activist, most recently serving as executive director of the immigrant and refugee advocacy organization OneAmerica, which she founded after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Jayapal immigrated to the U.S. from India at 16 to attend Georgetown University; she later earned an MBA from Northwestern University. Read more about Jayapal here.
MoveOn has 32,984 members in Washington’s 7th District.
Here’s what a few MoveOn members in the district had to say about Jayapal:
“Pramila has nearly three decades of experience as a movement builder. She is the candidate we need in Congress to make sure our progressive values have not just the right vote, but a Congressperson who is using the platform to advance the movement!” –Danielle F., Seattle, WA
“Pramila is a strong progressive voice who is endorsed by knowledgeable climate scientists and activists. One of our highest concerns must be our warming climate. She is best suited to push necessary action.” –Martin A., Vashon, WA
“Pramila is an amazing progressive. She has been a smart, passionate and tireless voice for people who have been voiceless in our so called democracy. People like her in D.C. will really help us ‘MoveOn.’ Go Pramila.” –Paul F., Seattle, WA
“Pramila is a true progressive champion, and MoveOn members in Washington’s 7th District are ready to ensure she’s fighting on behalf of all Americans in the House,” said Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action. “We need progressive beacons like Pramila in Congress to stand up to powerful interests and advocate for policies that benefit every American.”
This cycle, MoveOn members have also endorsed presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who won 79 percent of votes cast in a national ballot; Senate candidates Russ Feingold (Wisconsin), Tammy Duckworth (Illinois), and Ted Strickland (Ohio); House candidates Lucy Flores (Nevada 4th) and Mike Honda (California 17th); and Kim Foxx for Cook County State’s Attorney (Illinois).
In the 2014 election cycle, MoveOn members made over 6.7 million phone calls for endorsed candidates. MoveOn members have also raised millions of dollars—including more than $1 million for Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s Senate race in Massachusetts in 2012—mobilized volunteers, and run ads in support of endorsed candidates across the country.
MoveOn.org Political Action represents the collective will of MoveOn’s more than 8 million members at the ballot box by helping to elect progressive candidates.
