Statement from Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, in response to the Trump Shutdown:
“There is no doubt that Donald Trump, congressional Republicans, and their racist agenda are fully responsible for this government shutdown. When Trump rejected a bipartisan immigration deal and ended negotiations, he threw the entire government into chaos. Now, it’s on Republicans to restart those negotiations, pass legislation to protect Dreamers—who have been left in limbo since Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in September—and reopen the government.
“American voters expect Republicans—who control all branches of government—to figure this out and pass a spending deal that reflects American values, including the Dream Act, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and funding for disaster relief in Puerto Rico and elsewhere.
“More than 16,000 DACA recipients have lost their legal protection from deportation since September, and hundreds of thousands more are living in fear. This is not a policy issue that can wait any longer. Republicans have attempted to kick the can on a DACA fix several times. There is strong public support for the Dream Act, and MoveOn members will continue to stand with Dreamers until Congress fixes the mess Trump made when he ended the DACA program.”
Recent polling from Hart Research shows voters will hold Republicans and Trump accountable for the shutdown and reject Trump’s insistence on funding for the border wall in exchange for approving protections for Dreamers.
And recent
polls from Public Policy Polling and MoveOn in 25 Republican-held battleground House districts show that voters in key Republican districts support a clean Dream Act 3-to-1 and will blame the GOP for the shutdown.
MoveOn members have stood with Dreamers and immigrant youth leaders at the forefront of this issue by joining rallies, petitioning, visiting and calling their members of Congress, and more. MoveOn members have made more than 20,000 calls to Congress about the Dream Act, delivered more than a quarter million signatures, and have shared and viewed powerful videos lifting up the importance of the Dream Act more than 12 million times. MoveOn members are committed to continuing this fight in solidarity with Dreamers until it’s won.
