WASHINGTON – In response to House Republicans and Rep. Cuellar voting to approve the SAVE America Act, MoveOn Civic Action spokesperson Britt Jacovich released the following statement:

“With their popularity tanking, President Trump and Republicans are pushing outrageous lies about immigrants and our election systems to enact the most extreme barriers to voting in modern history. This is another desperate power grab to retain power at any cost. 

“Demanding Americans cough up original copies of birth certificates or passports to vote is an obvious attempt to silence nearly half the population.

“From trying to enact Jim Crow-era tactics to bulldozing their way into cities with masked agents and murdering and kidnapping people off the streets, Trump and Republicans are trying to silence our voices so they can get away with hoarding more power and wealth for themselves and billionaires. We won’t stand by while they scapegoat immigrants in our communities in attempts to strip away the voting rights of millions of us.

“MoveOn members see through these tricks and will be calling on the Senate to reject any form of the SAVE Act.”
