MoveOn’s Fastest Growing SMS Petition in Five Years Calls for No U.S. Occupation of Venezuela

WASHINGTON – A MoveOn petition, with nearly 50,000 signatures and growing in less than 24 hours, is calling for no United States occupation of Venezuela. The petition follows Trump’s declaration the U.S. will “run” Venezuela and his decision to invade and capture its President, Nicolás Maduro. MoveOn members overwhelmingly reject yet another expensive and deadly war, leading to the group’s fastest growing SMS petition since the end of the first Trump administration. 

“The American people did not vote for an illegal and taxpayer-funded forever war. There was no declaration of war and no legal justification for invading a sovereign country like Venezuela unprovoked, even against a dictator like Nicolás Maduro who has abused his people. MoveOn members remain as committed today as we were 26 years ago to opposing endless and unnecessary wars. Congress must do its job and rein in Trump’s gross — and deadly — abuse of power,” said Joel Payne, Chief Communications Officer for MoveOn Civic Action.  

This operation has nothing to do with the Venezuelan people or Venezuelan freedom. Instead, as Trump himself said, this is an attempt to build power and profit for the administration and oil industry that wants Venezuela’s oil reserves. The escalations prove yet again that Trump’s 2024 campaign lied to the American people in promising to lower costs and end forever wars.
