WASHINGTON– Last night, MoveOn Civic Action began projecting a series of anti-censorship messages onto the headquarters of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), calling out FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s politically motivated pressure campaign against media companies and free speech.
The projections target Chairman Carr amid backlash to his improper efforts at the behest of Donald and Melania Trump to review broadcast licenses of ABC stations for airing satire of the Trumps on The Jimmy Kimmel Show.
Projected messages include:
- “FCC: F*CK YOUR CENSORSHIP”
- “FCC: FEDERAL CENSORSHIP COMMISSION”
- “GOOGLE SECTION 326 OF THE COMMUNICATIONS ACT”
- “WARNING: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING…AND CONTROLLING WHAT YOU WATCH, TOO.”
The action comes as public pressure on the FCC continues to build. A MoveOn petition supporting Kimmel and opposing censorship has drawn more than 272,000 signatures and counting. Another MoveOn petition opposing the FCC’s accelerated review of ABC’s station licenses now has more than 21,000 signatures.
“The Trump administration’s targeting of ABC’s broadcast licenses sends a chilling message: Fall in line or face consequences. This is a clear attack on the First Amendment and a political stunt designed to intimidate critics, retaliate against a comedian practicing free speech through satire, and send a message to anyone who dares to speak out,” said MoveOn Civic Action Chief Communications Officer Joel Payne.
“ABC and Disney must not back down to Donald Trump or any bureaucrat in his administration doing his bidding. This is bigger than just an attempt to bully Jimmy Kimmel—this is about telling the American people what to think, what to laugh at, what to say, and what to criticize. Our members will fight any efforts to weaponize the government to punish speech and will hold corporations that bow to this pressure accountable.”
