Join NowA hard-hitting, full-page ad from MoveOn.org Political Action and NARAL Pro-Choice America running in this Sunday’s Denver Post blasts the state’s largest newspaper for endorsing Cory Gardner, a far-right candidate who holds views that deeply conflict with the paper’s previous editorial stances. MoveOn.org Political Action and NARAL Pro-Choice America are running the print ad as well as online ads on DenverPost.com.
The Post’s endorsement has drawn criticism from national media for being misguided and prompted one former senator to call it the “worst political endorsement by a serious newspaper.”

The print ad highlights contrasts between previous positions from The Denver Post editorial board and Gardner’s stance on issues including a woman’s right to choose, global warming, and immigration reform. MoveOn’s advertising campaigns are funded by small-dollar contributions; there are more than 101,000 MoveOn members in Colorado.
A MoveOn petition, started by Colorado MoveOn member Jamie Chesser, asking The Denver Post to retract its endorsement of Gardner already has more than 7,000 signatures as of Friday morning.
“I am a wife, a mother, a sister, daughter, and very proud to be from this great state of Colorado,” said Chesser. “Women’s issues and the environment are close to my heart. I have been a supporter of The Denver Post for many years, but they have made a huge mistake endorsing Cory Gardner for U.S. Senate and must retract their misguided endorsement. Mark Udall is the only choice for our next Senator if you care about women’s issues and the environment.”
“The Denver Post‘s endorsement of Cory Gardner flies in the face of what millions of Coloradans, and the Post, stands for,” said Jo Comerford, Campaign Director for MoveOn.org Political Action. “Voters deserve to know Gardner’s true record, from voting to shut down the government to supporting a bill that would ban abortions to trying to block a law that would cut carbon pollution. Like many Americans, the Post editorial board is frustrated with Congress—but sending the entrenched, right-wing Gardner to the Senate will only deepen this frustration and work against the values that The Denver Post usually touts.”
“The Denver Post‘s endorsement of a ultra-conservative pro-life, pro-personhood and anti-birth control candidate is shameful and a real disservice to it’s readers and the people of Colorado,” said Sasha Bruce, Senior Vice President for Campaigns and Strategy at NARAL Pro-Choice America. “For years, Cory Gardner has tried to hide his real record and has campaigned as a moderate. Apparently, he has fooled The Denver Post. Fortunately, we believe the voters of Colorado are smarter than the Post‘s editorial board and will see Gardner for who he truly is — a far right-wing politician who will limited a woman’s right to choose and access to health care.”
Last month, MoveOn and NARAL partnered on an ad campaign calling attention to Cory Gardner’s misleading TV ads on his positions on women’s rights and basic access to health care.
