Responding to the House of Representatives going into recess in the wake of Donald Trump’s inciting of a violent mob to attack lawmakers and staff in the Capitol, and now-breaking reports that Vice President Mike Pence will not invoke the 25th Amendment, MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting issued the following statement:
“We call on Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to immediately call the House back into session to begin impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump. Wednesday’s shocking events, and Trump’s central role in encouraging them, are such clear violations of the presidential Oath of Office and his continued presence is a threat to the safety of all of us that it is now vital that he not serve one more day in office. Such actions are, without a doubt, the kinds that motivated the Framers to vest Congress with the power to impeach a president and remove them from office. As Speaker Pelosi noted, Vice President Mike Pence has the responsibility to invoke the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office—but it appears that he and Trump’s innermost circle, his Cabinet, are unwilling to do so. Congress must immediately move to impeach, convict, and bar Trump from ever holding office again. Every moment that Trump retains the full power of the presidency puts our country and its people in peril.”
