MoveOn Blasts Fast-Track Trade Bill, Urges Democrats to Stand with Sen. Warren, Many Others In Opposing Deal

WASHINGTON DC – With news that the Senate is moving forward on a bill to fast-track the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn.org Civic Action, issued the following statement strongly opposing the legislation and urging members of Congress to defend U.S. workers and oppose the deal:

“Across the country, Americans of all walks of life have made their opinions on fast-track and the Trans-Pacific Partnership clear to their members of Congress: Either stand with working Americans and help stop the dangerous TPP, or give increased and unprecedented powers to giant corporations at the expense of working people.

“The policies adopted under Fast Track have cost more than a million jobs and contributed to the shuttering of more than 60,000 factories. Fast-tracking the TPP, which was formed in the image of NAFTA, will almost certainly lead to more job loss in the United States. The TPP is so big, and has the potential to do so much more damage, it’s been likened to ‘NAFTA on steroids.’

“MoveOn’s more than 8 million members are urging all members of Congress to stand with Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other leaders in opposing this secretive, dangerous deal that hurts American workers, undermines environmental and labor standards, and that could lead to another financial crisis.”

MoveOn members have taken numerous actions over the past few months to oppose Fast-Track and the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal:

  • More than 48,000 MoveOn members have signed a petition calling on Congress to reject the TPP. [Tell Congress: We Can’t Afford to Outsource More Jobs]
  • More than 4,000 MoveOn members signed up earlier this year to drop by the member of Congress’ office to encourage them to stand with people over corporations and reject the TPP.
  • In February, Robert Reich and MoveOn released a video titled “The Worst Trade Deal You’ve Never Heard Of – The Story of the Trans-Pacific Partnership,” a short explainer of the currently pending trade deal. The video has been viewed millions of times and urges viewers to make sure that Congress rejects Fast Track authority. View the video here.
  • In March, more than 79 percent of responding Oregon MoveOn members said they would support a primary challenger to Sen. Wyden in the 2016 Senate primary if the Senator helped grant fast-track authority to pass the TPP.  MoveOn has more than 88,000 members in Oregon.
