MoveOn Members Voting on Whether to Encourage Elizabeth Warren to Run for President

MoveOn.org, one of the nation’s most influential grassroots organizations, is poised to throw our full weight behind a campaign encouraging Senator Elizabeth Warren to run for president, pending a full vote of the MoveOn membership today—the first nationwide membership vote on whether to run a presidential draft campaign in our 16-year history.

MoveOn members: Please check your email for your ballot and vote today on whether we should run a major campaign to encourage Senator Warren to run for president. Votes can be cast until Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 9:00 a.m. EST.

Here’s why this idea is on the table: This moment was made for Elizabeth Warren. We’re at a crossroads in American history, with inequality soaring to levels not seen since the 1920s and an economic playing field rigged to favor Wall Street and corporate interests. Inequality, and the corrupting political power of big money, threatens to undermine every issue we hold dear—from climate change to racial justice, from student debt to the fate of Social Security.

And in the midst of all that, we hear the voice of Elizabeth Warren—rallying the nation with her transformative vision of giving everyone a fighting chance.

If she runs, there is no question that she will be a formidable candidate for the Democratic nomination and in the general election. We believe she can win.

If MoveOn members vote to move forward, we will work to demonstrate to Senator Warren that there is a groundswell of grassroots support for her vision of leveling the economic playing field and giving everyone a fighting chance. We’ll do this with on-the-ground organizers and offices in early primary states; via a massive online campaign with ads, videos, and cultural interventions; by signing up volunteers and building a list of people committing to give her their support; and by making the case aggressively and repeatedly that she is what our country needs right now.

In recent years, no one has been a clearer, more effective champion in Washington, D.C. for the middle class and working families than Senator Warren. Here’s what some MoveOn members have said in recent months on why they’d like to see Senator Warren run for President:

“Senator Warren is a true progressive, who can run as the People’s Candidate.”—Eric A., Strasburg, PA

“She is a non-establishment candidate with the charisma to run, win, and change the nation!”—Brad G., Austin, TX

“I absolutely love her attitude towards the middle class, healthcare, and college loan reform. She is TOUGH.”—Meredith H., Georgetown, KY

We have an opportunity—a preciously short window—to collectively speak up and encourage Senator Warren to enter the race, and show her that if she does, she’ll have the support she needs to win.

Now the vote: MoveOn members will decide what we do next. The results should be available at 11 a.m. EST on Wednesday.
