ICYMI: Americans Oppose Trump’s Actions in Venezuela

Health Care, Cost of Living Driving Concerns

WASHINGTONAs President Trump escalates an unauthorized and illegal intervention in Venezuela, all of the new polling shows that Americans, including many of his own supporters, are wary of deeper U.S. military involvement and overwhelmingly opposed to another open-ended foreign entanglement.

Across multiple polls conducted before and after the operation, Americans consistently express skepticism that U.S. military action is justified, legal, or aligned with their priorities. Instead, voters say the federal government should focus on urgent domestic concerns like health care costs and the economy — not foreign conflicts.

Recent polling findings include:

  • Quinnipiac University: Nearly 6 in 10 registered voters oppose U.S. military action in Venezuela, with only about 1 in 3 in support. Republicans are divided, while Democrats and independents are overwhelmingly opposed.
  • AP-NORC: Only 1 in 10 Republicans say the U.S. should take a more active role in solving the world’s problems; most say the current role is “about right” or should be reduced.
  • Reuters/Ipsos: Nearly three-quarters of Americans worry the U.S. will become too involved in Venezuela, with majorities opposing occupying the country or seizing its oil resources.
  • The Washington Post/SSRS: 9 in 10 Americans say Venezuela’s future leadership should be decided by the Venezuelan people, not the United States. Only about 4 in 10 Americans support sending the U.S. military to capture Maduro, while a similar share oppose it and roughly 2 in 10 remain unsure, underscoring widespread uncertainty and lack of public mandate.
  • The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research: Just about one-quarter of Americans say foreign policy should be a top government priority in 2026, down from roughly one-third in recent years, while majorities prioritize health care, cost of living, and economic concerns.

“The American people are clear: they don’t want another costly, forever war,” said MoveOn spokesperson Britt Jacovich. Trump and Republicans already jacked up our ACA premiums, and groceries, energy, and housing keep going up and up. Now, Trump is spending money on a potential war to benefit his billionaire cronies and Big Oil. Venezuela should be run by Venezuelans. Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to act now and stop this abuse of power.”

These findings align with what MoveOn members are already demonstrating through action. Over the weekend, members launched the organization’s fastest-growing SMS petition in five years, demanding no U.S. occupation of Venezuela and calling on Congress to block funding for unauthorized military action.
