about Paige Cognetti

MoveOn is proud to endorse Paige Cognetti for Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District!

Leadership and Experience

Paige Cognetti is the Mayor of Scranton, Pennsylvania, with a career defined by independent leadership, fiscal reform, and a commitment to rooting out corruption. She first entered municipal leadership by taking on the local political establishment as an Independent in a campaign dubbed “Paige Against the Machine.” She made history as the first woman elected Mayor of Scranton—winning while eight months pregnant—and was later re-elected as a Democrat with over 71% of the vote.

Before serving as Mayor, Paige served as a Special Assistant to the Pennsylvania Auditor General, uncovering waste, fraud, and abuse across state programs, and served on the Scranton School Board to advocate for students. As Mayor, she led Scranton out of a 30-year state-designated distressed financial status (Act 47), upgraded the city’s credit rating from junk to investment grade, balanced the city budget, and secured over $155 million in federal and state grants. Now, she is running for Congress to bring that same reform-minded, anti-corruption fight to Washington.

How she’ll help your community:

  • Rooting Out Corruption in Washington: Paige is pushing a sweeping anti-corruption plan to ban congressional stock trading, prohibit members of Congress from serving on corporate boards, implement term limits, and enforce “No Budget, No Pay” rules when Congress fails to pass a budget.

  • Lowering Everyday Costs for Families: She will take on corporate greed and hidden charges by capping credit card fees, stopping utility gouging, and breaking up big-box monopolies to restore fair competition for local small businesses.

  • Investing in Infrastructure & Local Jobs: Drawing on her success in Scranton, Paige will work to fast-track funding for regional infrastructure—including safe streets, bridges, and passenger rail—and implement smart, targeted tariffs to protect local manufacturing.

  • Expanding Housing & Community Investment: Paige cut red tape to facilitate nearly a thousand new homes and hundreds of small businesses in Scranton, and she will advocate for directing more federal funding straight to local municipalities and counties to build affordable homes.

Her position on key issues

  • Government Transparency & Auditability: Paige advocates for a comprehensive, mandatory independent audit of every federal agency to eliminate government waste and fraud with precision rather than broad, reckless cuts.

  • Protecting Healthcare & Medicaid Access: She is committed to defending Medicaid, ending middleman practices that deny doctor-prescribed medications, and protecting access to healthcare marketplaces so workers and small business owners can afford coverage.

  • Strengthening Labor & Organized Workers: Endorsed by major labor unions, Paige supports protecting working families by making it easier to start or join a union and promoting union-backed jobs.

  • Holding Insurance & Utility Companies Accountable: She supports reforming the insurance industry to ensure policyholders are protected during crises, as well as curbing predatory utility rate spikes.
