MoveOn: Dem sweep in VA shows power of the Resistance; U.S. House clearly in play in 2018

Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, had the following response to Ralph Northam’s and Justin Fairfax’s victories in the Virginia governor and lieutenant governor races tonight:

“Tonight, the Commonwealth of Virginia joined the Resistance.

“MoveOn-endorsed Ralph Northam has been declared the next Governor of Virginia. Northam’s victory is a major defeat for Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, Ed Gillespie, and Republicans who seek to gain power by stoking white nationalism and dividing Americans on the basis of race. Their toxic politics were resoundingly rejected by Virginia voters.

“It’s clear that Republicans are out of ideas and facing a growing wave of resistance going into 2018. The Democratic base has been fired up by Trump’s and Republicans’ attacks on health care and so many American communities, and Democrats have a chance to win back the House and races up and down the ballot in 2018.

“And, a Democratic rising star was born with the victory by Justin Fairfax, who will be Virginia’s next lieutenant governor. We commend his bold progressive campaign that engaged and inspired grassroots volunteers across the commonwealth.

“Victories by MoveOn endorsed delegate candidates such as Danica Roem, Jennifer Carroll Foy, Elizabeth Guzman, Hala Ayala, Lee Carter and others point to a bright progressive future in Virginia. These candidates demonstrated how running grassroots-fueled campaigns that embrace our nation’s diversity and inclusive, populist ideas are the way to win in 2018.

“Tonight’s victories demonstrate the influence, power, and determination that a bold and inclusive Resistance movement is carrying into 2018.

“The American people are demanding better leadership and a brighter future. MoveOn members are excited to keep mobilizing in support of progressive champions, and we will work to resist a radical GOP and win back power so we can once again make progress towards economic and social justice.”

MoveOn has 129,000 members in Virginia who endorsed and have been organizing to elect Ralph Northam governor, Justin Fairfax lt. governor, and 11 candidates for the House of Delegates including Danica Roem (VA-13), Chris Hurst (VA-12), Elizabeth Guzman (VA-31), Jennifer Carroll Foy (VA-2), Kathy Tran (VA-42), Lee Carter (VA-50), Hala Ayala (VA-51), Donte Tanner (VA-40), Karrie Delaney (VA-67), Kelly Fowler (VA-21), and David Reid (VA-32).
