MoveOn Congratulates Brad Lander’s Win in New York

Another primary win for people-powered campaigns over dark-money

NEW YORK CITY – In response to Brad Lander winning his primary race to become the Democratic candidate for New York’s 10th Congressional District, MoveOn Political Action Executive Director Katie Bethell released the following statement:

“Brad Lander’s primary victory marks a triumph for grassroots, people-powered movements over the dark-money, corporate-aligned interests within the Democratic Party. Lander is a dynamic and bold champion who will take on the affordability crisis in New York, get corruption and dark-money out of our politics, and hold Trump and Republicans accountable. MoveOn members are eager to maintain this momentum, continue mobilizing for Lander, and work to elect a representative who will fight for the people. The mandate from MoveOn’s membership is unmistakable—it is time to replace incumbents who prioritize the agendas of Big Money and MAGA-aligned war hawks over the daily struggles of working families.”

Lander has spent his career taking on bullies and showing up for New Yorkers, from preventing evictions in Brooklyn to winning groundbreaking protections for fast-food workers and freelancers while on the City Council to being arrested by federal agents while defending immigrants from ICE.

MoveOn went all in to support Lander’s campaign, calling more than 75,000 voters, recruiting volunteers to canvass, and placing multiple digital ads in the district.

The Lander endorsement was part of MoveOn’s “Stop the War Hawks” campaign to counteract candidates backed by defense, crypto, and AIPAC lobbies and support those running on an affordability platform. Pro-war lobbyists and PACs have faced losses in recent elections in Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Jersey, CA-22, and now NY-10, despite flooding money into primary races to stack the deck for their preferred candidates. So far this year, pro-Israel groups have spent at least $30 million–and of that figure—nearly $8million via shell PACs and partners–on primary races.

MoveOn has initiated the largest primary campaign intervention in its history, backing a wave of bold, populist candidates like Lander, Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, and Randy Villegas in California.

Last month, Politico reported on the launch of MoveOn’s $27 million election program to win big in the midterms, stop President Trump’s unchecked power, and rebuild trust with more voters.
