MoveOn: Senate Democrats Must Reject Any Funding Bill That Greenlights More ICE Cruelty

WASHINGTONIn response to House Republicans, with the help of a handful of Democrats, voting to approve annual funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without instituting any guardrails for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), MoveOn Civic Action spokesperson Britt Jacovich released the following statement:

“Americans want health care and lower costs, not masked ICE agents kidnapping kids from playgrounds and schools. The House just failed their latest test to hold Trump and his dangerous ICE street gang accountable for killing innocent people like Renee Nicole Good and many others. Senate Democrats need to step up for the American people and block any funding bill that gives another dime for ICE to abduct five-year olds and kill citizens.”

The vote comes after Puck News and Axios highlighted how MoveOn Civic Action increased the grassroots pressure on Congress to reject the The Homeland Security Appropriations Act. Over the last few weeks, there has been a historic rise in MoveOn member advocacy for the Trump administration and Congress to rein in ICE, with nearly 40,000 letters sent to Congress in only three days. Members have been activated to call congressional offices throughout the week.

MoveOn is among the more than 500 human and civil rights groups leading the charge to push Congress to hold ICE accountable in the wake of escalating violence tied to ICE operations.

Last week, MoveOn Civic Action joined Indivisible, Public Citizen, Movimiento Migrante DC, ACLU, Interfaith Alliance, FreeDC, and allied organizations to lead an “ICE Out For Good” rally and candlelight vigil demanding accountability and an end to continued funding for ICE’s unchecked violence, attended by 1,000 local advocates, faith leaders, and community members outside the U.S. Customs and Border Protection headquarters. Senators Chris Murphy, Chris Van Hollen, Alex Padilla, and Ed Markey, joined by Representative Maxwell Frost, addressed the crowd and called for congressional support of urgent proposals to rein in immigration enforcement practices that have fueled fear, trauma, and harm in communities across the country.
