Defending Our Rights: Holding Trump and Republicans Accountable for Betraying the American People

The Trump administration is continuing to follow the authoritarian playbook by working to criminalize and silence those who are pushing back. While Trump takes away our health care and rips kids away from their families, we answered with historic organizing and protests across the country, with millions making their voices heard. The people showed up en masse to demonstrate where the real power lies. From D.C. to Des Moines, MoveOn members mobilized in their communities, calling out MAGA extremism and demanding dignity for all.

When Trump and Republicans made massive cuts to Medicaid, school breakfast programs, food benefits, and housing vouchers, MoveOn and partner organizations united to hold Families First rallies, drawing thousands and making national headlines. To support this, MoveOn members smashed records this summer by making more than 315,000 calls to likely Medicaid recipients and their families, helping them connect directly with their representatives.

Trump told people he would lower costs, but his chaotic policies have increased inflation and raised costs for American consumers. MoveOn is working to create awareness and mitigate against the harms of Trump’s tariffs, while educating the general public about how these tariffs will impact their lives and communities. MoveOn also hosted a “Talk Tariffs to Me” event with Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Chris Murphy, Roxane Gay, and others to talk about how Trump’s tariffs are driving up prices and rigging the economy for billionaires.

There is no time to rest, no time to sit back.

In these critical times, Trump’s intensifying authoritarian actions threaten our nation daily. He is actively attacking essential programs like Medicaid and food assistance, escalating harmful raids on immigrant children and families, and trying to silence anyone who disagrees with him. MoveOn is uniquely positioned to confront these challenges, offering unparalleled reach, training, organizing, and support within the progressive movement—resources that are more vital now than ever before.

We’re up against a lot right now, but over the past few months, we’ve shown what we can achieve when our community comes together. We have the support of the people, and it’s crucial to turn that energy into action by bringing millions of us together to fight back, training our people on peaceful resistance, pushing Congress and other democratic institutions to rein in Trump, and building the mass resistance movement.

That’s what real organizing looks like, and we’ll need more of it in the coming months.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, our work is clear, and our resolve is stronger. We’ve started the year with powerful momentum, and there are countless reasons to be optimistic. We will remain steadfast in our commitment to building a more hopeful and equitable America for all. Together, our collective power is unstoppable.

Stay in the fight with us. The future is in our hands. Let’s rise to meet this moment together.

Member Update: Progress in Motion

At a time when our democracy is being tested like never before, MoveOn is doubling down on what we’ve always known to be true: People power is how we win. For decades, we’ve been on the front lines, building power from the ground up, fighting for justice, and refusing to back down.

That’s why I’m so excited to share with you—our most committed supporters—that Katie Bethell has been named MoveOn’s next executive director. Katie has been in the trenches fighting for paid family and medical leave, she’s built teams and strategies to lower costs and raise incomes for working people, and she knows how to lead with both vision and grit. Most importantly, she embodies the humility and purpose that the MoveOn family has always stood for. With roots in organizing and a history of mobilizing millions for bold change, Katie is ready to lead us into MoveOn’s next chapter.

As I pass the baton, I couldn’t be more proud to welcome Katie into this role. Her vision, leadership, and deep commitment to justice make her exactly the leader MoveOn needs for this next chapter. I’m excited for you to hear from her directly.

It has been a great honor to serve as MoveOn’s executive director over the past six years. I’m deeply grateful for your partnership.

Thank you for all you do!

Message From Katie

To everyone shaping the future with us: I am honored to take on this role and continue the legacy created by Rahna, the incredible MoveOn staff, and our passionate members and community. Like many of you, I believe that organizing and people power can redefine what is possible. And I know there’s not been a more critical time to do just that than right now.

There is so much we can achieve together. I am proud to work alongside you and look forward to fighting with you in the coming months and years.

With my sincere gratitude,

–KATIE BETHELL

Here are some of the critical efforts and wins:

  • We’ve crossed major milestones on our social media channels, with over 545,000 followers on Instagram (@MoveOn), amplifying our stories, uplifting organizing updates, and sharing calls to action. Over 40,000 MoveOn members signed a petition demanding that Kilmar be returned to the U.S., just as the Supreme Court has demanded.
  • Despite the passage of Trump’s billionaire-first tax plan, MoveOn is now in full accountability mode, continuing to fight against cuts to federal aid and crucial programs like Medicaid, with petitions garnering over 143,000 and 43,000 signatures, respectively. Your contributions empower us to fight these injustices and defend the vulnerable.
