What is Medicaid?
Medicaid is a state and federal program that funds health care for more than 70 million Americans. That’s 1 in 5 Americans.
This includes disabled people, older adults, children living in poverty, and families caring for loved ones.
Medicaid makes people healthier and saves lives.
It is a lifeline for aging and disability care in homes and nursing facilities. It pays for nearly half of all American births.. And it helps keep rural hospitals open and operating.
Many Americans don’t even realize they have Medicaid, as it’s under a different name in each state:
Without Medicaid, more people will be forced to go without necessary care until they reach a breaking point and need to receive care in emergency rooms. Americans would get sicker, and hospitals would become overburdened.

But Trump and Republicans want to take health care away from working people to pay for additional tax cuts for billionaires and huge corporations.
You’ll hear Trump and Republicans hide behind bureaucratic jargon:
Block grants = Giving each state a set amount of Medicaid funds, instead of matching the costs. This would force states to reduce benefits and strain state budgets.
Work requirements = Make recipients jump through hoops and prove their work status. This would take away care from the disabled, the elderly, and family caregivers.
Lifetime caps = Each American would have a price limit on their health care – essentially ending care for millions of Americans who need it most.
But it’s all just a fancy way for Trump and Republicans to say they want to cut Medicaid and take away health care from millions of people so they can give tax breaks to the rich.
